Google bought Metaweb in order to improve their search engine. Jack Menzel, Google director of product management, said that the acquisition would help "improve search and make the Web richer and more meaningful."

Metaweb has created an open database of more than 12 million things, such as such as people, companies, movies and books, and how they relate to each other. This database, called Freebase, will help Google answer more complex questions.

Metaweb is a semantic search company that has capability to connect internet search words to real-world things.
